CELEBRATE THE LUNAR NEW YEAR IN LONDON IN 2022
When is Chinese New Year? Lunar New Year, also referred to as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, is an annual event that falls shortly after the western new year’s celebrations have drawn to a close. In Chinese traditional culture, each year is named after one of 12 animals. Tuesday, 1 February 2022 marks the Lunar New Year, and more specifically, the Year of the Tiger in Chinese culture.
There are many different ways to turn this cultural event into a memorable occasion and wish the London community "Xin Nian Kuai Le" or "San Nin Faai Lok.” Celebrate the Lunar New Year in London by exploring the wide range of activities taking place in Canary Wharf to herald the arrival of the Year of the Tiger!
CLUB VERTUS COOKERY CLASS AND BANQUET
There are few better ways to explore the richness and diversity of Chinese culture than by learning about Lunar New Year food London traditions, many of which are thousands of years old. Celebrate this auspicious occasion with an exclusive cookery class hosted by Club Vertus, which will teach you how to create sumptuous Chinese dishes that are traditionally enjoyed around this time of the year.
Once you’ve mastered the art of making dumplings, you’re invited to partake in a celebratory banquet alongside Vertus’ other residents to ring in the Year of the Tiger in style.
LUNAR NEW YEAR 2022 AT THE NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM
There will also be celebrations taking place nearby at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Guests are invited to travel towards Trafalgar Square to welcome in the new year with a range of performances, activities and parades at the museum, either in person or online. The programme is completely free to attend and will take place on 29 January 2022.
The event has been designed in collaboration with the Greenwich Vietnam Women's Group, Global Fusion Music and Arts, and the Newham Chinese Association. Tickets can be booked online to attend the Chinese New Year festival London, which will kick off at 2 pm local time.
LUNAR NEW YEAR IN LONDON 2022
England’s capital city is also home to the Lunar New Year in London 2022 – the largest Chinese New Year celebration outside of Asia. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people take to the streets of the West End to enjoy a vibrant parade, free stage performances, traditional Chinese foods.
This year, celebrators can instead follow the hashtag #lunarnewyear or #CNYlondon on social media to enjoy an online programme of activities and events from 31 January onward, view a special television broadcast on 6 February, and see the iconic London Eye lit up in red and gold for the occasion.
